A rich melting pot of urban Culture - characters, vibe, food, street art, heritage
Hôla ! (common greeting on the streets of Jo'burg). The discovery of gold had the obvious result of a rush of all colour and creed, turning Johannesburg into a rich culture melting pot. Today, stories are told by, not only the ethnic groups that speak South Africa’s eleven official languages, but also in Fanagalo (the miners’ language) and those of the variety of immigrants, mainly of African origin, as well as 'early' immigrants; the Portuguese, Jewish and Indians, among others. This kaleidoscope of cultures can be complicated and tough for the visitor to comprehend but visiting just the right areas of Johannesburg brings to life a 'common' culture, an 'Urban' culture; a 'Johannesburg only' culture through sights, sounds and smells of everyday life and the peoples that live it, tastes of local food and drink, insights into architecture, extraordinary local art, 'bush' medicine, traditional games, fashion and music.
